Fixi

One evil and one good dating app

Fixi is a dating app that uses a predictive database to estimate the number of potential matches for each user, addressing feelings of uncertainty. The app calculates the number of matches based on factors like income, attractiveness, and other personal details, giving users an idea of their possible connections.

This approach taps into the insecurities many people experience while searching for relationships, offering a sense of predictability and control over the process. The malicious version of the app manipulates user behavior by creating fake profiles if the user doesn’t engage with the app enough. These fake matches are designed to give users the impression that they are receiving more connections, encouraging them to use the app more frequently.

Transparency

In the good version of Fixi, the app clearly explains how the number of potential matches is calculated and makes it clear that the predictive database cannot guarantee 100% accuracy. Transparency is important here, so users understand how factors like income, attractiveness, and other personal details affect the match predictions. On the other hand, the malicious version of Fixi lacks transparency, with no clear explanation of how the app calculates matches or how users' data is used.

Use of language

In the good version of Fixi, we focus on communicating with the user in a friendly and supportive way, ensuring there is no pressure placed on them. The goal is to create a positive and stress-free experience. In contrast, the malicious version takes the opposite approach. Here, the app uses subtle and manipulative language in notifications to create pressure on the user. By carefully crafting our wording, we guide the user toward specific actions while making it seem as though they are making the choices themselves. This approach is designed to influence user behavior without them being fully aware of it.

Other differences

Another difference is that the malicious version includes a paid feature called Fixi Plus, which offers users insights into which parts of their profile are most popular and suggestions on how to improve their profile. This feature is designed to exploit the insecurities of users, encouraging them to pay for guidance to make their profile more appealing.

On the other hand, the good version focuses on user safety and well-being. It includes features in the chat that allow users to report inappropriate behavior or suspicious accounts. This helps create a safer environment on Fixi, ensuring users feel protected and supported while using the app.
